Some six million Poles died during the Second World War, half of whom were Jews murdered in the forests east of the country or in the death camps set up after the German occupation. By far the largest of these was Auschwitz Birkenau which was the site of over one million deaths, mainly Jews brought there from all over Europe. Our tour examines the lines that were persistently drawn by the Nazis in their relentless persecution of the Jews and other groups they deigned undesirable, enabling trip participants to bear witness to one of the darkest chapters in human history as well as reflect on the lasting lessons for today.

Cultural awareness
We cannot emphasise enough that we are travellers and therefore guests. Although we ourselves might have different views, ideas, rules and morals, it is our duty to respect and adjust where possible to the people of the region we are visiting. Never throw pens / sweets out of the vehicle. It is very patronising! Your Tour Leader will also brief you on environmental matters.
Religious Awareness
The predominant religion is Roman Catholic, but there is a scattering of other Christian faiths.
Animal Welfare Policy
The welfare of animals in the different countries we tour in, is important to us. Our Animal Welfare Policy at Nomadic School Tours was created in accordance with ABTA and Industry guidelines, which focuses on the health care and positive maintenance of our working animals and wildlife we encounter. By working closely together with our local business partners, we strive to maintain the correct standards of animal welfare.
Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Refuge
Recently, in conjunction with our Animal Welfare Policy, Nomadic has decided to financially support Jarjeer Mule and Donkey Refuge. Jarjeer Mules is a retirement home, orphanage and care centre for working equines in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains near Marrakech. The team works with local people offering support not only to the equines but also children and adults who want to learn more about equine care.
Nomadic School Tours Association
Nomadic School Tours work with and donate to the Ait Ouham Association for Development, which is a grass roots organisation that tackles local issues such as lack of education and poor infrastructure in the Atlas Mountain area of Morocco. It especially concentrates on the education and creating opportunities for girls in the Valley to further their education.

PLN = POLISH ZLOTY rates are subject to fluctuation. Exchange facilities are available at various bureau de changes in major towns and most banks have ATMs. How much spending money is needed, depends largely on the individual. We currently recommend an average of USD $20 – $30 per day. We can’t specify every sundry cost however and you’ll need to allow for expenses such as drinks, snacks and the odd souvenir. Travellers Cheques can be difficult to change en-route, so we recommend you have cash for convenience and bring a card to use in the ATM’s—most accept Visa, MasterCard, Electron, Cirrus and Maestro. There are ATM’s at the airport, which you can use upon arrival.

Climate
Poland is situated in a moderate climate zone. In summer (July) the temperature varies from 25 – 35 degrees Celsius. The coldest months are January and February with temperatures falling a couple of degrees below zero.
Welcome to Poland. The next four days are bound to have a significant impact on you as you learn about the history of the Holocaust. Your flight will arrive in the morning where your guide will meet you at the airport and take you to drop your bags at the hotel. After lunch we’ll enjoy an orientation tour of central Krakow including the Market Square and Wawel Castle. After sightseeing, we will return to the hotel to check in and enjoy dinner.
Today will be a difficult day for some, but it is an incredibly important part of history. We depart Krakow for our all day visit to Auschwitz. This will be fully guided and will start at the Auschwitz I Concentration Camp. After finishing this tour there will be time for a packed lunch before we make our way to Birkenau Death Camp in the afternoon. Here again the tour will be fully guided. When the tour is completed, we will return to our hotel for an evening meal.
This morning we will spend some time in the Kazimierz District of Krakow. The renowned Jewish quarter featured prominently in the film Schindler’s List and it is here we see the rebirth of a Jewish community destroyed during World War II. In the afternoon we will take a 30-minute journey to the Wielickza Salt Mines. Sodium Chloride has been produced here from the upwelling of brine since Neolithic times. We follow our guided tour around this amazing place, the highlight being the Grand Ballroom where Pope John Paul II visited in 1971 when he was Cardinal of Krakow. Mass is still celebrated here every Sunday.
It’s our last day in this historical city so we will finish our tour with a visit to the site of Oskar Schindler’s factory which is now part of the Krakow Museum. Schindler’s Factory consists of three parts, namely its permanent show, space set aside for temporary displays and the screening room. The permanent exhibition is entitled ‘Krakow under Nazi Occupation 1939 – 1945’ which correctly summarizes its contents. The screening room is meant as a venue for movies, lectures, meetings and varied cultural or educational activities. After we have explored the exhibition thoroughly, we will have lunch then return you to the airport for your flight back to the UK. Thank you for traveling with Nomadic School Tours.
